You Already Know How To Ride Your Bike…

…now learn to drive it! Many cyclists have never learned to drive their bicycle safely amid motorized traffic. And even experienced cyclists can benefit from a refresher of the basic rules of cycling safety. Laws change over the years, and conditions on the road can change from day to day.

The New Jersey Bike & Walk Coalition will be offering a series of cycling education classes. The course curricula for most offerings was developed by the League of American Bicyclists and is taught by League-certified Cycling Instructors. These courses are designed to help you ride more safely on our busy streets and highways.

Smart Cycling is an introductory cycling education course that gives cyclists the confidence they need to ride safely and legally in traffic or on the trail. The course covers bicycle safety checks, on-bike skills and crash avoidance techniques and includes a student manual. This fast-paced, nine-hour course prepares cyclists for a full understanding of vehicular cycling. A more complete description of the course curriculum can be found here. Smart Cycling is equivalent to the League of American Bicyclist course Traffic Skills 101 and is the prerequisite course for other, more advanced LAB courses and is also necessary for those wishing to become a League Cycling Instructor. A record of your completion of the course is maintained by the League of American Bicyclists in Washington, DC.

Bicycle Commuting is a three-hour course designed for cyclists wishing to begin using their bicycles for transportation and making a change to their commuting lifestyle. There is no prerequisite needed for this class.

Using Your Gears is a two-hour course and gives novice (and sometimes experienced!) cyclists a basic introduction to their bicycle’s gearing system. Discussion on why to shift, how to shift, and when to shift will be supplemented by a short road ride, as we practice what we learn in the class.

Watch for announcements of future classes.

Attention Bike Clubs/Shops, TMAs, etc.

If you are interested in organizing classes for your customers, members, or for the general public, give us a call and let’s talk about it. All we really need is a place to hold the class – we can supply all of the necessary class and A/V equipment. Classes are kept small for lots of individual attention.
