Education Coordinator: Les Leathem
As the Education Coordinator for the New Jersey Bike & Walk Coalition, Les Leathem is responsible for marketing and delivering the “Smart Cycling” curriculum of the League of American Bicyclists in New Jersey. Les, whose career has spanned three decades in the pharmaceutical industry, brings skills in management and marketing and an understanding of quality control to the NJBWC Bicycle Education program and his teaching.
Les, who holds a BA in Biology from the University of New Orleans, is certified as a League Cycling Instructor (LCI) and qualified to deliver the entire “Smart Cycling” curriculum to cyclists of all ages and abilities. He is also a League Coach and teaches experienced cyclists seeking to become LCIs. Certification to advance from an LCI to a coach is rigorous and requires extensive knowledge of bicycles and riding. As a League Coach, Les has been called upon to teach outside of New Jersey
Les is an experienced cyclist, having logged many thousands of miles for charity and club rides and for recreation, health and fitness. He has proudly participated for 9 consecutive years in the Anchor House Bike Ride for Runaways, a 7-day, 500-mile charity ride. He has also ridden in other charity and organized bike rides, such as the Tour de Cure and MS rides in New Jersey and Cycle Zydeco in Louisiana.
During his career in the pharmaceutical industry, Les served in increasingly responsible roles where he was involved in the education of co-workers, physicians, and clients. He has trained employees for highly specialized pharmaceutical products and worked in new product marketing, where he was responsible for the launch of a major new pharmaceutical brand. Later, Les moved into advertising, first as an account supervisor at an advertising agency, then moving into market research consulting with a variety of clients to improve their brand identity. He has worked for Sanofi Pasteur, Lowe Healthcare, The Nielsen Company, and Kantar Health. While at Janssen Pharmaceuticals, Les excelled and received the President’s Award for sales.
When not teaching or riding his bicycle, Les can often be found playing piano or singing choral music with one of the four groups with which he has sung over the years. His passion for music led him to help to found a 501(c)3 organization devoted to performance of small-group choral repertoire. Les is a member of the League of American Bicyclists, New Jersey Bike & Walk Coalition, West Windsor Bicycle and Pedestrian Alliance and the Princeton Freewheelers.
